Fowler's Grill

In a one-horse town, this is where the horse is. It's had its ups and downs, but it remains a landmark on Church Str. Locals love it, as there are no surprises here.
Not even Chef has a bad day. If you're looking for more than just steak, ask about other menu options or vegetarian choices to ensure everyone finds something they enjoy.
When I arrived in Worcester thirty-three years ago, there was a landmark restaurant called Albert's owned by a crazy, drunk by the same name (pronounced the French way), but could this man cook? Absolutely.
One didn't always know what to expect from his kitchen as it was filthy, cockroach-infested, and disorganised, and ran like a roller coaster. Surprisingly, we were always impressed. Albert succumbed to his addiction, and shortly thereafter, three young men courageously opened a new "Steakhouse" on Church Street. Of course, the original name was Saddles; it's still there, still a Steakhouse, serving the same fare as they did three decades ago.

Even the "Gordon Blue" is still on the menu, unfortunately, in this town, "Cordon Bleu" is too much to ask for. Besides ownership changes, two other things have changed too; one was a name change, it became St. Geran, and the other was the decor (the log furniture stood the test of time but was discarded, I think the old timers became too old to move the chairs!)So, after a 3-week holiday in Vietnam, we had red-meat cravings.
There's no food in the house, so the obvious thing to do is to go out for a steak. "Where to?" I asked my husband, this wasn't meant to be malicious, I'd just returned from a country with a gazillion eateries, he looked at me and rolled his eyes, "What do you think?" So it was to Fowlers we went.

I don't expect cuisine here; all I expect is a good steak, and once again, we weren't disappointed. Precious always goes into long, overstated descriptions when ordering his steak. It has to be THICK, RARE, and either a Rump or Sirloin, weighing 300g. The portions are generous, so we always ask for 7 chips and Garlic butter. I'm allergic to anything other than butter. The other side dishes are good, and we've enjoyed crispy onion rings and grilled vegetables too.
Once again, Fowler's delivered the goods. My salad was fresh and crispy, what more could I ask for? It was Tuesday, and the restaurant was packed. The atmosphere was vibey, so all in all we felt like we'd never been away. Will I go back? An unfair question, as I have no choice but to. The management and staff are always friendly and chatty, and they know their customers.
The wine list features locally sourced wines to suit most palates. Please add your memories and anecdotes of eateries in Worcester, especially Albert's! I'm sure there are many. I vividly remember a young G.P who was regularly called to save Albert from himself, who had to climb through the tiny lavatory window with his medical bag to help his patient!

Fowler’s Grill has morphed into a pizza joint, I seem to recall, still situated on Church Street. It is a vibrant restaurant for a chilled evening under the stars during the summer months or under the vine-covered pergola. The Pizzas are highly rated—the perfect venue to meet friends for a relaxed lunch or supper.
