The Barefoot Cook Hermanus

She's got diamonds on the soles of her feet. Fresh, wholesome local food is always pleasing, especially when it's made with good humour, love, and passion. Mari-Claire puts comfort back into food. When I'm enjoying a glass of My Best Friend in the company of my best friend, life is good.
We’re regulars at the Barefoot Cook in Hermanus. I can't think of a nicer eatery on a Saturday morning. First, we browse in the second-hand bookshop, what could be nicer? Then we trot through to the Barefoot cook (Chef does indeed walk around barefoot). A good breakfast can be enjoyed here, and then the blackboard menu for lunch is a winner. Small, delicious meals are served. My husband loves the winter comfort food, which he'll never get at home, liver, kidneys, venison, but do not despair, there's something for everyone to enjoy. I've not studied the wine list, as I have the house red. Many diners love the fresh orange juice, and most local beers are available. Our waitress is lovely; she almost knows everyone by name and makes all her guests feel at home right away. This eatery comes highly recommended. You won't be sorry... promise.
While having breakfast at the WIMPY in Maun, who should we see? None other than Mari-Claire and her delightful husband Bert, they're Bundu bashes like us, and, as a double whammy, are also camping at the Khwai community camp! They were our neighbours! One evening, we dragged them over for a sundowner and got to know Bert.
Precious and I went for supper at their house, and what a memorable meal that was. Just goes to show, regulars do get special treatment.
Sadly, our darling Rita decided she needed to make a career move, which we don't begrudge her, but we do miss her. As a last word, the new waitress had better know her stuff to win our hearts.

Since writing this blog all those years ago, a lot has changed. The Barefoot Cook was sold, the new owner, a lovely chef and owner of the Fisherman’s Cottage in Hermanus, was killed in a hit-and-run accident one evening after work, and not only did Hermanus lose a beloved chef, but the Barefoot Cook closed its doors too. Mari-Claire changed careers and, I believe, is now a highly respected guide to tourists, specialising in German-speaking clients.
