Skietkuil Guest Farm, a star in the Karoo

This one's a keeper in my books. Situated right on the N1 from Cape Town to Johannesburg, slap in the middle between Three Sisters and Richmond, it offers a warm, authentic Karoo experience. Beautifully renovated farmsteads, tastefully decorated with all the amenities for a self-catering stay for one night or 10, make you feel at home. The dining room serves genuine Karoo home cooking, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere that makes you trust the place is special. The owners, a delightful young couple, genuinely care about making guests' stay memorable.

Not only is Skietkuil perfect for a one-night stay, but I would love to return for a weekend. My husband would love to return to do a spot of hunting next year. Numerous antelope species roam here, and, if memory serves, the package includes venison preparation.

Here you can unwind, relax, and enjoy the beautiful Karoo at its very best. Take long walks, sip sundowners on the stoep, or enjoy a glass of excellent red in front of the fire. The tranquil setting encourages a sense of peace, helping you feel refreshed. There'll always be good company to inspire you if needs be. There is a well-stocked honesty bar in each unit, and the pantry will ensure you don't leave on an empty stomach if you can't enjoy the breakfasts. Showers are hot, beds are warm, and in summer, this will be a cool oasis too. I always browse through the visitors' book, and the one in our unit was a book of praise all the way through. We will return sooner rather than later.

PS UPDATE 18/06/2026  We have stopped over at Skietkuil on numerous occasions since this blog post, and I still believe it’s the best rest on the N1. The farm has transformed into a well-known hunting farm and lodge, and each visit continues to impress. We have seen the children reach adulthood, the owners become a little greyer, and the guesthouse refurbished and improved. Our positive experiences keep reinforcing our trust and enthusiasm for this place. We still give it a thumbs up.
